Dear GNYDA Members,
We are heartbroken by the recent events occurring across the U.S. and in our own city. The weight of the countless lives lost to racial injustices, along with a pandemic that disproportionately affects people of color, is weighing on our hearts greatly. We stand in solidarity with our Black members, colleagues and their families.
As registered dietitians, we adhere to a code of ethics that calls us to “value and respect the diverse viewpoints and individual differences of all people.” The mission of the academy and of GNYDA is “most effectively realized through the promotion of a diverse membership that reflects cultural, ethnic, gender, racial, religious, sexual orientation, socioeconomic, geographical, political, educational, experiential and philosophical characteristics of the public it services.”
We also understand that the racism many of our clients, patients, and members face is a public health crisis. As an organization that represents the leaders in nutrition, we are committed to fight the inequality that continues to permeate the communities we serve. We stand by the peaceful movements seeking positive change and will work closely with our diversity and inclusion partners to learn and grow as an organization.
If you are not already doing so, we suggest following and/or donating to Diversity Dietetics. They are doing great work to strengthen our field. In addition, you can write to your Congress people to support the Medical Nutrition Therapy Act of 2020 which would expand Medicare coverage for MNT beyond renal disease and diabetes. Racism affects healthcare in many ways and this bill would help communities who are more likely to have to deal with chronic conditions and often less able to pay out of pocket.
We are here to listen and we are open to all feedback. Please feel free to share your thoughts and suggestions with us on how we can be a more inclusive organization at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Stay safe and healthy,
The Greater New York Dietetic Association
